Todos Santos, Mexico
In my ongoing obsession with green juice I asked staff at the Hotel California where I could get jugo verde and they told me ‘she’ was up and over a block.
She is actually Cindy and Javier, they opened Todos Los Sanos three months ago. The town is a bit if a former hippie place where lots of retirees now live so there are many organic and health food options here – along with expat prices.
But Cindy wanted to keep prices low so this is no frills kind of place. You won’t find organic wheat grass or nut butters but you will find these two trying to get locals to eat more fresh fruits and veggies.
They are converts themselves, after they quit smoking they both gained considerable weight and then heard of the documentary Fat Sick and Nearly Dead where a truckdriver turned his life around with juice.
I have spent every morning here, talking to them about juice, urging them to visit Oaxaca. People come in and out and you can see some ate believers while others turn their nose up at the spinach in my drink and we laugh as I promise if they throw a little spinach in with strawberry and pineapple they won’t taste it.

Word is spreading fast amongst, Executive Chef Dany from Hotel California has his own recipe on the wall amongst many other concoctions.
It’s kind of a special place to be somewhere on the verge of changing people.

I'm Ayngelina and in my mid-thirties. I left an amazing job, boyfriend, apartment and friends to find inspiration in Latin America. I'm creating a new life choosing what I want instead of what other people think I should do.

What a timely post! A friend of mine just proclaimed on Facebook that she was starting a juicing cleanse… I’ve never been a big fan of juices myself, but have heard only good things. My boyfriend actually blends his own fruit smoothies on a regular basis, but I’m so particular about the fruits I like that I’ve been afraid to experiment with him!

I don’t now if I could ever do a cleanse but I do like them for breakfast.
Yay. Go, green smoothies!
I agree you can’t taste a few handfuls of spinach even in amongst a fruit smoothie.
I need to work on a plan to stay healthy while travelling. I tend to go a bit “wild” and put on weight. Especially when travelling in America.

I am the same way, I keep trying to eat as much as I can. It starts to add up.
No way! I watched that exact same movie Saturday night on Hulu, and bought a juicer on Sunday. Too funny!
For anyone else who wants to watch: http://www.hulu.com/watch/289122
I now have a giant pitcher full of green juice in my fridge at all times. haha.

Thanks for posting the link to the documentary, Matt – I just heard about it for the first time last week and I’d really like to watch it

Hmm, I really need to drink more juice. I love it anyway – but don’t have a juicer at my current residence!
Nothing better than a fresh carrot juice in the morning tho!

Start with a blender, I prefer them as smoothies anyway.
I love fruit in juice form–it cuts out the need for all the annoying peeling. The fresh fruit juices are probably on top of my list of things I love about SE Asia (and it’s not all that long a list really).

Throw some veggies in with the fruit, you’ll love it.

Love my green smoothies. I just had one for dinner! I could find fruit smoothies when I was in Prague, which were good, but nothing green. I’m getting ready to start a cleanse sometime next week. Have to get my head into it.

I really start to crave greens, especially after a night of indulgence I prefer one for dinner as well.
The more you talk about Green Smoothies the more I might cosider converting. My cousin has a juicer she’s never used. I’ll watch that documentary – it’ll sway me.

Start with a blender if you have one. I actually prefer them to be more like smoothies.
I love that last photo!!!
Seriously… we gotta talk. We have great juicing recipes.

Perhaps you should post on your site, we’ll start a green juice revolution.
One of the things I miss most about Latin America is how easily available fruit smoothies are available just about any where. Now I know I can add a bit of green and it will help me.

I know I so miss maracuya. I wish we could get it in Toronto.
Loved this post, as I’m sitting drinking mine (well, a green smoothie). I’d love there to be a day where I can ween myself off the morning coffee and be more dependent on the green thing. BTW, what’s in the glass in the first picture? (More specifically, what are the seeds on top?)
The glass was one with mostly beets which is why it was red. I think it may be flax on top. I like to put chia, cacao and maca in mine as well.
Very cool, smoothies are awesome. I’m completely obsessed with them and trying to convince Spain to get on the smoothie bandwagon too!
The documentary looks great too, thanks for the recommendation.

If you like that Hannah recommended Food Matters, Forks Over Knives is a great one too.
I don’t think I’d want spinach in my fruit smoothie, but I’d be willing to try it. Sounds like it’s working!

Just try it once, I swear if you throw a handful of spinach into your regular smoothie you will not be able to taste it. You can thank me later.
Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead is what turned me on to juicing. Green lemonade is now a staple in my diet!
Now that is a good idea.
You have inspired me to find a juice place in Paris! Any suggestions?
Meg | One Love Meg recently posted..Rise and Shine… It’s Vegan/Gluten Free Pancake Time!
Ooh Paris? I would think any vegetarian/vegan place would either have it or know where to get it.
I LOVE green juice! I first got into it after I watched ‘Food Matters’, which you should check out if you can. I am selling my trusty juicer just before we set off for India – I’m so sad it won’t fit in my backpack!
Hannah recently posted..The truth shall set you free
I have seen Food Matters, if you like that also check out Forks Over Knives.
High fructose corn syrup and cable television will be the death of so many but it has become a sort of western mantra. Kind of like “bread and circuses” kept the masses blind and happy in ancient Rome. Not sure juice is THE answer but it could be a start.
Jonathan Look, Jr. recently posted..Zapatista Passport Check
I think the Internet may be replacing cable television for a reason to be sedentary, at least it has with me.
Ahh, I’ve seen that movie listed on Hulu too but never got around to watching it because the title didn’t sound appealing. Thanks for the additional info.
I’m taking baby steps to get into heavier greens, like a bit of spinach in my spaghetti. I could probably do some in a smoothie too.
Scott – Quirky Travel Guy recently posted..Photo Essay: 88 Images from Alaska
You will never taste it in a smoothie. Just start with a handful of spinach.
I’m a big juice fan too – though I confess I find it hard to keep it up in winter. Cold juice is the LAST thing I want when I’m already cold.
Thankfully things will warm up over the next month, and then I’ll get back to this oh so healthy habit.
Krista recently posted..Photo Essay: The Streets of London, Part One
I started in the Spring so hopefully it will be enough of a habit when the cold weather comes.
The second post I’ve read tonight on green juice.
Kick up the bum to have it again.
I was having a daily beet, kale, spinach and apple juice. Compeltely hideous but it did wonders for my energy and well being.
I’m back on the juices tomorrow and really should since I bought a juicer!!
If you start with more pineapple, kiwi or orange it isn’t so bad. But I love how they make me feel so much that I can drink the gross stuff and enjoy it.
I guess I need to jump on the juice bandwagon
Tiffany @ theUnimaginedLife recently posted..Swiss Chocolate. Mmmmm.
You won’t regret it!
I think I’m going to look into a juicer – here in Thailand – there are so many things that could be blended up to create something delicious. Thanks for sharing the video clip too, I’ll try to watch the full thing soon!
Start with a juicer, if you don’t mind things being a bit thicker, I actually prefer it to have the pulp.
I loved that documentary–very inspiring regardless of your current health! I’ve been trying to make more green juice at home, Kris Carr has really easy and tasty green juice and green smoothie recipes (and her ‘Crazy Sexy Cancer’ is another documentary that almost got me to go vegan). Great idea to ask fruit juice vendors to throw some greens into the mix!
Cassie recently posted..Alaska Update (Or, An Invite to Fish Dinner at Our Place)
I had heard of Crazy Sexy Cancer but never watched it, I’ll look it up.
This film changed my life. I’ve lost 45 lbs. since Feb. 1. Green juices rocket nutrients right into your system. When you’re well nourished you’re no longer hungry. It can be watched for free on Hulu.
I “borrowed” it from the Internet because we can’t watch Hulu in Canada.
Right! I’ve got my HotSpot shield up and I’m watching this doco on Hulu right now!!!
Now… if only someone would invite a pocket-sized travel juicer that would be perfection! I encounter so many wonderful markets with fresh produce while travelling but without kitchen facilities we really are limited to fruit that can be eaten as is.

I use a magic bullet, it ends up being a smoothie instead of a juice but when I took a juicing class at Travaasa Hana they said it’s actually better because you get the fiber as well. Most people have issues digesting all the fiber but that if I could handle it to was fine. The only issue I have had is with kale, sometimes it makes me bloated.
I just went out and bought a great juicer! Came home and made green apple, cucumber, kale, spinach and ginger juice. God damn it was good! Even my two-year old drank it and he refuses to eat fruits and vegetables. Feeling awesome!
A magic bullet sounds perfect for travel though. Good for baby food too.

So cool you are in Mexico, read through some of the posts and brought back memories. I do want to visit Belize but now thanks to you will try not to step foot in Belize city! Agree about the juice thing, need to get back into it. Safe travels.
Molly recently posted..Sunshine Escapes in Mexico
I have considered going back to Belize because I only spent a week there and really tired of it. Even though I’ll never go back to Belize City I have heard great things about the rest of the country.
That’s a great movie. I watched it a while ago and it has had a direct influence on my life. In fact, as I type this I am drinking a juice I made this morning – Romaine, cucumber, pear, zucchini, carrot, ginger, cantalope, green apple, kiwi, pineapple & blackberries.
I’ve been juicing (in addition to food) for about 8 months and about 2 months ago I switched to juicing 1 – 2 meals a day. It has made a HUGE difference in my body and my health. I haven’t been sick once this year which for me is really a miracle. I really believe in the power of juicing and the vitamins from fresh fruit & veggies.
It’s turned into a travel problem because I want to bring my juicer everywhere with me!
bethany recently posted..My Favorite Memories from our trip to Guatemala with #CoEdGuatemala
Wow I had no idea. I am more into smoothies than juices although a juicer told me it was okay since I’d get the fiber and if it didn’t bother my stomach all was good. Get a magic bullet, perfect to travel with.
Wow, I always thought fresh juice was a popular thing here. It’s on all of the street corners where I live in D.F. I’m completely addicted to it!

Oh I so love jugo verde, I don’t feel right if I begin a day without one.
I am a fellow lover of green juices. Sadly, they weren’t many to be found in Northern Argentina. I miss spirallina. I used to have a green smoothie every morning for breakfast. On a different note, today I had an orange and carrot ice-cream, which was the best ice-cam I’ve ever tasted! Vegetables are clearly awesome
I loved this doco. It was the catalyst for my fiance to start his health kick after a few years of poor health. I am so thankful he watched it!
Chompchomp recently posted..Mundaring Truffle Festival 2012
My wife and I recently watched that documentary and have now started juicing. We are not doing the juice fast but we do have juice twice a day and then eat a sensible meal for dinner (for me it’s primarily vegan.)
The movie is very compelling and I have to say I do feel more energized and healthy since juicing. I went out to his website and grabbed a bunch of juice recipes. This is also a great time of year to find local organic produce.
The only complaint I have about my juicer is that it doesn’t leave much of the fiber in the juice.
Matt recently posted..Sabbatical 2.0
Thank you for sharing this compelling movie. Green juice is definitely packed with a lot more antioxidants than the ready-made food that a lot of people opt to eat. This article is nice because it gets people to think about their diets.

I started drinking a green juice recently before breakfast. I have never felt so healthy, it’s awesome getting a days serve of veggies in one sitting. Never felt better physically, also great way to lose weight if your into that.
