I almost never share contests here but this was too good not to write about. momondo, a travel search engine. just announced a new contest in the US and Canada that may be the most interesting of 2017.
Dedicating to opening our world, momondo is giving out 30 DNA kits – which is cool enough on its own to discover your ancestry. But of these 30 DNA kits one lucky winner in each country will receive $1,600USD ($2,100CAD) to travel to visit countries found in their DNA.
I have a DNA kit at home that I haven’t used yet. I think its fascinating to find out DNA information because sometimes previous generations lie about where they are from or change details. When my great grandparents moved from Italy to Nova Scotia they changed their last name from Bucciarelli to Bucci because it was easier for Canadians to pronounce and they wanted to fit in.
I’m not the only one interested in my DNA. Last year momondo ran a DNA Journey campaign inviting people to take the test. They discussed their heritage and were honest about prejudices against other cultures.
Watch this emotional video showing this campaign, which showed people that we are all cousins in a broad sense and that we have more in common with the world than we think.
As part of the “New World” I think Canadians and Americans understand their heritage is vast and varied, but do we really know the whole truth about where we’re from?
You may not think of a travel search engine to work on campaigns that tries to break down prejudices. But really travel is knowledge and when we experience other cultures we become more open-minded to cultures that are not our own.
Beginning April 5, 2017 momondo will run a four-week competition to win one of 60 DNA kits (30 in Canada and 30 in the US). You can enter by writing a short entry (only 250 characters or less) about how they will open up the world through travel.
There will be one winner from the US and one from Canada who will win a trip to meet the people and experience the culture from the countries they are from.
