Mallorca, Spain

When I arrived from the overnight ferry from Valencia I thought my body was sore from the seats and I was tired from lack of sleep.

But that was just the beginning, I had idea a silent invador was quietly waiting.

Headache

Body ache

Stuffy nose alternating with runny nose

Sore throat

I’m sick

I have been so lucky the last 18 months, without a sniffle or tummy rumble but I did promise myself that if I ever got sick I would check in somewhere nice.

As awful as it is to arrive to this sunny holiday island with a head cold I am so thankful Hotel Amic Horizonte invited me to stay with them for the week.

I knew that the hotel offered value for price in a very touristy area but I was surprised that I had a whirlpool in my bathroom and my views from the balcony are stunning. And when they found out I was sick they immediately asked if I needed tea or anything else.

Sure it’s not the newest building or really fancy schmancy but really neither am I. This hotel makes me think I need to start upgrading from hostel to hotel more often especially as I am finding that a lot of hostels are the same price as hotel rooms now.

If I were sick in a hostel this would be miserable.

So don’t feel sad for me (and I know some of you never do), I’ve been watching the cruise ships float by as I sharpen my Spanish skills watching the Mentalist and CSI in Spanish. A couple days resting in bed and I should be prepared to take Mallorca on properly.

Yes I feel miserable but I’m definitely not suffering.

I agree with your strategy of find a comfortable place to stay until you feel better. I’ve shacked up in some pretty dodgy digs when I’ve been sick and it seemed to amplify the malady even more.

    1. Ayngelina Author says:

That was why I had to promise myself that if I ever got sick I would suck it up and just pay whatever it took to stay somewhere nice.

  2. Beautiful photography, and a beautiful location.

I hope you get better soon!

  3. dtravelsround says:

I got sick a few times when I was on the road — and only once did I have a private room. I SO wish I could have treated myself. Being sick and in a hostel is miserable.

  4. Heather Carson says:

I’ve lucked out. The only time I’ve been really sick in the last three months was in Mongolia. I had a host grandma who gave me traditional remedies that set me right quickly!

  5. The World of Deej says:

Definitely good advice…I am a bit of a baby when I’m sick, so I would need to find somewhere nice also:)

    1. Ayngelina Author says:

I’m a total baby, so it’s good there was no one around me.

  6. The Travel Chica says:

Have you also been able to keep up with the Kardashians 🙂

    1. Ayngelina Author says:

      They aren’t on in Spain!

But that’s okay because there is lots of trashy Spanish television to watch.

  7. Upgrading to hotels when you’re a budget traveler staying in cheap guest-houses and dorms is like medicine for your mind and body. So nice to have a legitimate bed, warm water all the time, a TV, and privacy/silence!

  8. I’m glad that I’m not the only one who watches crime shows when I’m feeling down/bad.

    1. Ayngelina Author says:

I used to be a Law and Order addict and I still take comfort in knowing it is usually on television in whatever country I am in.

  9. This was totally me in Berlin a few weeks ago. I was staying at a hostel but I had my own private apartment there. It was the best thing ever, I don’t think I would of been able to deal had I been sharing a room with anyone.

    1. Ayngelina Author says:

It’s a toss up sometimes I love the social aspect of hostels and meeting new people who become great travel companions. When I’m sick I just want to be alone, watch CSI and eat Spanish ham.

  10. Glad your not suffering I was ill for a few days in Melbourne and it is so tough to will yourself to do things. Hope you get better soon!

    1. Ayngelina Author says:

I hope you still were able to enjoy Melbourne, I have heard such great things about it.

  11. Annette | Bucket List Journey says:

It is so nice to have your own space when you are not feeling well. And what a nice space it is!
    Feel better soon 🙂

    1. Ayngelina Author says:

Yes it’s those times when you are so grateful to be somewhere nice.

  12. Sorry you were under the weather. Glad to see that even while incapacitated you can manage to take one more great photo to keep us enthralled. Looking forward to reading about your healthy adventures in Spain.

    1. Ayngelina Author says:

With a view like that, who wouldn’t take a photo.

  13. Raymond @ Man On The Lam says:

I’m with you on the hostel front — I never stay in them unless it’s a private room. For me, the comfort and a good night’s sleep is well worth the few extra bucks.

    Hope you got better!

    1. Ayngelina Author says:

I really do like hostels for the social aspect but no one needs to be social with a sick person.

  14. So sorry to hear you were sick, but glad that you were staying in a comfortable and scenic place. You definitely need to consider upgrading to a hotel for the same price.

    1. Ayngelina Author says:

I know, it’s so nice just to have a bathroom all to myself.

  15. Andi of My Beautiful Adventures says:

Oh gosh nothing is worse than traveling sick. I hope you feel better soon!!!

  16. Que te mejores! And seriously, CSI will get you through this slash convince you that you are always being stalked by a rapist.

    1. Ayngelina Author says:

And you know oddly enough they still have the same cheesy opening line in the beginning, although in Spanish it’s not as campy because so much of the television is cheesy.

  17. The GypsyNester says:

Like you, I just want to be alone when I’m sick – good call on treating yourself! In Barcelona, I lucked with the late night movies to practice my Spanish with, Breakfast at Tiffany’s (awesome) and Rambo (hilarious – made even funnier with dubbed grunts!) Feel better sweetie. -Veronica

At first I was upset that I couldn’t find an English channel but then I was surprised that I understood the shows, a blessing in disguise.

  18. Sorry about the sickness! Totally agree about hotel vs. hostel… we’ve found that (especially for two of us), a hotel room is so worth it, especially when you aren’t feeling well or need a chance to recharge and refresh.

    1. Ayngelina Author says:

If I were in a couple I think I’d go the hotel route a lot, it is often cheaper than a private room in a hostel.

  19. I visited and explored Mallorca a couple of months ago, such a beautiful island. Lots of great hiking and snorkelling. Are you in Palma? It’s such a great city. Hope you’re feeling better. I hear the weather is still warm out there, so hopefully that will help!

    1. Ayngelina Author says:

The weather is fantastic, warm during the day and with a breeze at night.

  20. 🙁 Being sick is the worst, but it makes you appreciate feeling healthy. Feel better!

  21. Roy Marvelous says:

Sucks being sick while on the road. Get well soon!

  22. That’s the best advice- always pick a comfortable place to stay until you feel better.

    I hope you do soon!

    1. Ayngelina Author says:

      Thanks Erik

  23. ugh! how wretched! Hope you are all well now. Being sick while traveling is awful.

    1. Ayngelina Author says:

I was so lucky but I guess it is inevitable.

  24. TheWorldOrBust says:

I always switch from hostel to hotel every few days just to enjoy both options more…

  25. Feel better soon!!!

  26. Camels & Chocolate says:

    Awwww, poor thing.

Coincidentally, the sickest I ever remember being in my life was when I was in Spain in 2006 writing a guide for Frommer’s. I, too, had been staying in many hostels, but luckily when I got so deathly ill, I was staying in the nicest hotel in Bilbao, which was the only silver lining in that whole scenario!

  27. Jade Johnston says:

Possibly the best place to be sick

  28. It sucks to be sick on the road but you’ve definitely got the right idea of laying low in comfort to get yourself better!
I took myself out a hostel in Thailand and booked into a quiet hotel for a few days when I was ill – did me a world of good! Fell better soon =)

  29. Fancy Schmancy?

    That’s a room with a view and a deck.

Just waiting for a bottle of wine now!

  30. Feel better soon!

  31. Federico @ MaiTravelSite says:

Get well soon! I just bought a book 2 days a ago that is a sequel to one i bought in Mallorca. Andrew Britton thrillers are full page turners!

  32. get well soon Ayngelina

  33. I’ve remembered getting sick on my trip to Egypt. It was awful because I had to sleep as much as possible. Only got better after about a week, which by then I was nearing to the end of the short trip. To date I’ve cancelled my holidays twice. Once from chicken pox and the other from swine flu. Anyway, get well soon!

    1. Ayngelina Author says:

Oh wow you have really bad luck!

  34. Sorry to hear you were feeling sick, hun, but am glad you were really treating yourself well while recovering. 🙂 The best way to do it.

  35. Escape Hunter says:

I too prefer hotels. Not the kind of hostel-stayer… nope.
I need my own private space, the best feeling of security.
    Hostels excluded.
Mallorca must have been great, so sorry you got sick!

  36. You had very good hotel anyway. Mentalist is the best! I saw it in russian ))))
