Innsbruck, Austria

During my time in Innsbruck all I kept hearing about was how amazing the gelato was in the square.

People kept raving about it so I put it on a mental checklist of things to do – although wary of Austrian food, especially after the wiener schnitzel incident.

I like ice cream. I’m not a die hard fan like my friend Rease who will go on a date with someone she detests just because it’s an ice cream date.

My last night I finally made it to the gelato shop. Amorino had a line out the door like everyone had mentioned, which is always a good sign but I remained jaded.

Is it just me, or is my eye doing something weird making me look like Popeye?

That is until they handed me my cone shaped like a flower. I had chosen a cream based gelato and one with fruit.

It was as delicious as it looked. A bit pricey at nearly $5 for gelato, after I ordered I heard this was the real deal and the way to know is if the shop serves gelato with a paddle.

It was better than any gelato or ice cream I’ve had. From now on I’m looking for a paddle.

I just ate ice cream at Persicco ice cream last night. So delicious! I didn’t realize they had gelato in Austria.

And yes, you do look like Popeye.

  2. Emily in Chile says:

That design is crazy – how do they make it look like a flower?

And your Popeye face is cute 🙂

  3. You do look so cute! I had amazing gelato in Florence, with a paddle. Expensive as well but for a splurge it is worth it! Your face is saying..hurry up and take my picture so I can stuff my face with yummy gelato!

  4. I love that you mentioned my ice cream obsession. Even better: Jorge caught me laughing and I explained “Ayngelina mentioned me in her blog, about how I will go on a date with lame guys if it is an ice cream date.”

Jorge: “Oh you mean that guy in Rosario?”

me: “…no that was a different ice cream date. There have been several”

  5. Ah, man, was already craving ice cream even before reading your post. Now I NEED gelato! 🙂

Looks yummy & the design is very cool. And what’s this? Nobody is going to take away your camera. Put it down. 🙂

  7. Aargh! I had always wanted to try that gelato in Innsbruck. We kept passing that square but never had the time to stop. Now, like the Sacher Torte I missed tasting in Vienna, the Austrian Gelato will forever make me feel I missed out on something.

  8. My daughter lived in Italy for 3 years. She always raved about the Gelato. I’ll have to ask her about the paddle.

  9. That looks delicious! I am blaming all the gelato(s) I ate this summer for my 5 extra pounds. But I wouldn’t mind having some more. 🙂

  10. The gelato looks great, but the flower presentation is fantastic! I didn’t know that about the paddle either. Great tip!

  11. Yum! I’ll take that over wiener schnitzel any day. Oh, and I need a new lens.

Looks delicious — what are the flavors? There’s a bit of Popeye in that photo, but it looks good on you. 🙂

Oh wow, there’s an Amorino that opened recently in NYC. I had no idea it was a chain! It was really good, but it was definitely the flower shape that got me. 🙂

  14. LOVE the flower shape! The paddle is definitely key. Scoops are for ice cream 🙂

  15. I’ve always wanted to try gelato – I don’t know why I haven’t yet; There’s an Italian place in Cardiff that sells it. That looks YUM, hun. Glad you enjoyed it. 🙂

I love gelato… BUT I have yet to find a scoop in the States that has the taste and texture of the gelato I experienced in Bellagio, Italy. I think it is one of those things that you cannot import, as soon as gelato is eaten outside of Italia it is just fluffed up icecream…
