Food Friday: My dirty food secret
Pin It
Florence, Italy

I may get kicked out of the country for this but I must admit it…

I ate McDonalds in Italy.

I know it’s awful. It’s disgusting. It’s blasphemous.  But let me explain!

Jaime and I went out last night. Per usual I drank too much red wine. Today as we were waiting for our train we wanted wifi and hangover food.

Jaime knew where to go. McDonalds has the Euro meal and free wifi. Or so we thought, turns out not in Italy but that was after we ordered.

I don’t even like McDonalds in Canada but it seemed like the perfect idea.

Please don’t hate me.

P.S. Did you know you have to pay extra for ketchup here?

While I don’t condone your actions (joking) you wouldn’t be the first put on the boat. In Italy I saw plenty of people through the McWindows, and many of them were too well dressed to be visitors.

Oh yeah it was packed, and lots of people with backpacks trying to find wifi!

Crazy. I know you have to pay extra for some condiments in certain restaurants in Australia.

You also get funny looks if you ask for extra napkins.

Yes, you have to ask for extra napkins.

I haven’t had McDonalds in over 11 years.

I am actually not a McDs fan at all. I eat fastfood maybe once or twice a year but if I am going to eat junk I’d prefer it to be Burger King – not that it is any better!

ha.. and you also got suckered for ketchup!

You cannot eat french fries without ketchup, I also like a little mayo.

How are you going to call me out like this??? LOL!!! Ahhh but yes we drink way to much the night before and well I think McD cures all hangovers. I love the photo jaja~

Oh & I hate they didn’t have wifi!

You know, I visit McDonalds in many countries I travel to – not so much for the food (though it’s sometimes great the morning after!!!) but because I like to see what they have that’s different. I will never forget the McRamadan meal we came across in Morocco many years ago. And of course there’s the famous Pastel de piña we loved in Guatemala (so bad for you but so good!!! It’s research…. right? ;)

Well I do feel a bit better with your support Mardi – in Latin America I visited the local versions of fast food to see what they had but Italy doesn’t seem to embrace the idea of fast food, which is a good thing.

The Australian McDonalds has incredible toasted banana bread. Although I would still only ever visit for the free wi-fi. No free wi-fi = definite fail!

    • Ayngelina on the January 20, 2012 remarked #

Wifi in Italy is really bad so I wasn’t surprised.

If you come to the East Coast of Canada in the summer we have the McLobster, which is a lobster roll. I have had it, not bad although you can go to any restaurant for a better one.

Euro Meal – as in in costs a Euro, or is a specially designed meal for European tastes?

    • Ayngelina on the January 20, 2012 remarked #

It costs a Euro, cheapest thing you can buy. It’s their version of a dollar menu.

  15. Debbie @ European Travelista on the January 20, 2012 remarked #

I have a feeling most of us succumb to the ease and quick meals at McDonalds! I actually did this in Budapest one night. I spent a full day out and about and arrived late back to my hotel. Needed something quick and able to carry back. McD’s to the unfortunate rescue! The rest of my meals were local foods :)

It’s because you don’t have to think about it, every place looks the same and regardless of what country you are in there is a lot of English. It’s far too easy!

I actually did something similar in France. Hate McDonald’s at home but in another country it sounded like a great idea. Flawed logic, but we’re all allowed to make mistakes – we’re only human after all.

I have tried using the wifi outside McD’s in Italy and found out it’s not free like it is in Spain…I have also gone to Starbucks in Spain for their free wifi…I am not ashamed! A girl has to do what she has to do to stay connected (or find directions to a place!) and sometimes it is fun to see how the menu is different.

I think the main difference with going to North American fast food places while traveling is that it is not an “all the time” occurence, but a “once in a while” occurence. I loved KFC in Thailand. It tasted better than at home. I went to Starbucks in Chiang Mai a few times because I got addicted to their caramel frapps with tapioca cubes in them. But I also ate a lot of Italian, Israeli, Indian, and Thai food when I was in those countries…
