Charlottetown, Canada

I’m back on the East Coast of Canada for a couple of days for a conference but it’s not all work.

Today I was invited to check out The Culinary Institute of Canada’s Culinary Boot Camp.

I’ve taken many cooking classes, some are great and other pseudo classes just make you feel like you’re cooking as you sit around and watch the instructor prepare your lunch.

Here you really do cook, and today’s theme was East Coast favourites so I wasn’t sure how much I would learn as I grew up in Nova Scotia on traditional dishes like fish cakes.

I’m also responsible for cooking lobster for Christmas Eve. But Chef Ilona Daniel taught me something new – how to put lobster to sleep.

If you can’t view the video above, please check out: How to put a lobster to sleep.

  1. Bwahaha! The first photo of lobster looks like it has fallen a sleep standing up! 🙂

  2. Raymond Waruhari says:

That is the funniest photo of a lobster I have ever seen.

  3. Ha! You should have called this video “Lobster Yoga.” PS: I am going through your old packing posts and they make me want to cry. You are such a light packer! In my next life I want to be you.

  4. Awwwwwwww!! There’s something so sweet about that!

  5. That is hilarious!

  6. We can have a sleep-off on Christmas Eve….

ROFL! We used to put our pet rabbits to sleep by flipping them upside down and rubbing between their eyes.

Now that I’ve never heard of!

  8. Lawrence Michaels says:

Cool trick, but what’s the point in doing this? It’s not like a lobster will get far if it tries to run away.

  9. Diana Edelman says:

When I first saw the title I thought it was going to show to put a lobster to “sleep” in the sense of never waking up. That was super cute!!

  10. Travel Origins says:

Great post! I haven’t read anything like this. Thank you for sharing.

I grew up with lobsters and boiled them in a restaurant and I didn’t know about putting them to sleep either. It’s amazing how much there is to learn out there. 🙂

  12. Wow! that’s incredible.

  13. The lobster fell a sleep standing up?

  14. So what exactly do you do with a lobster you put to sleep?

  15. I find the video funny. If only the lobster knew that he’s now a superstar. LOL

  16. Darlene. Boudreau says:

I’m from Nova Scotia and my family are commercial fishermen. Before cooking , my dad or grandfather would put them upside down as the video shows and rub there back! I thought they were trying to make me feel better! Lol!
