Curious George is quite the traveler.

I first saw George on the streets of New York and was immediately jealous. Not because I wanted to go there, but because I hadn’t thought how to make my own street scenes more interesting. I had the mandatory photos of Times Square but they looked flat, like dozens of other traveler’s photos.

I have heaps of photos of me posed with various monuments; they are hidden in a shoe box along with negatives that are dying a slow death.

Now that I have a shiny new DSLR I feel compelled to snap these shots; with unlimited memory why wouldn’t I? Isn’t it compulsory to take photos of these monuments to mark that I was there?

Don’t I have to post on Facebook to brag to my hundreds of acquaintances and a handful of friends that I’m doing something interesting?

Curious George tells a story; he draws you in, he makes you feel like it could be you there. You want to see more photos of him, to know where the monkey has traveled and what incredible sites he saw.

So I was ecstatic when George’s owner gave me my own alter ego. Knowing the name of my blog and my penchant for bacon he handed me Mr. Bacon vs. Monsieur Tofu. A perfect pre-trip gift. Even the box is hilarious:

There’s been a lot of smack talk between Mr. Bacon and Monsieur Tofu as Only one can remain at the top of the food chain!

Mr. Bacon: Come and get it! You’re about to get served!
Monsieur Tofu replies: Creve viande, creve!
Mr. Bacon: You’re going down soy boy!
Monsieur Tofu: Not this time you greasy punk!
And for those Monty Python fans:
Monsieur Tofu: Go away, or I shall taunt you a second time!
Mr. Bacon: Bite me!

I’ve decided that like Desmond to Faraday, Mr. Bacon will be my constant . He’s small enough to carry in my day pack and amusing enough to brighten my day.

I’m hoping Mr. Bacon makes these shots a bit more interesting and if I can figure out perspective, we may just end up in a few together.

Desmond is Faraday’s constant. If you recall Faraday writes in his journal “If anything goes wrong, Desmond Hume will be my constant.”

Although Faraday eventually is killed by his own mother. I hope that doesn’t happen to me.

  2. Love it! I’m agonizing over some similar way to bring personality to my photos and videos. Mr. Bacon is awesome.

Congrats on finding your travel-mate. But I thought Desmond’s constant was Penny?

  3. Love it. I’m looking for something to show on camera to indicate to my wife that I’m thinking about her. And let’s not let the comments deteriorate into Lost nerdery, haha!

  4. Yes! Mr. Bacon. We’ve wanted to do something like this, but we haven’t found anything as cool as Mr. Bacon to carry around with us. Kudos to you on that one!

hehe I love it. Whats even more fun is going to be imagining you setting them down for the photo 🙂

You mean there is a whole back story on Mr. Bacon…way too deep for me!

  7. I love this! Not only are you adopting little mascots, but you’re on an awesome track of giving them personalities.

Just be sure not to pull a Tom Hanks/ Castaway and start talking to them, unless you’re really stuck on an island.

  8. poor mr tofu no wonder he’s so bland – no one takes him around the world.

Who doesn’t love Curious George? Glad to see some other monkeys get their prime time in the travel blogosphere.

Ok, how did I miss Mr. Bacon. LOVE HIM. If we cross paths, watch out sister, he might end up in my arms. 🙂

Mr Bacon is magic! I hear he’s on a winning streak too! (Ok, ok, I’m going!)

LOL! So when you post on Facebook, have you created a profile for George so you can tag him? BTW – great insertion of a Monty Python line.
