Avoid Tourist Traps and Eat With Locals
I am Ayngelina Brogan. 15 years ago I left a career in advertising for a one-way ticket to Mexico. What started as a solo travel career break grew into a full-time life as a traveler, writer and YouTuber.
I am a professional food hunter. I believe food is the most direct way to understand culture and history.
Alan is my partner in life and travel. He appears frequently in our YouTube videos and helps document our experiences as we move through different countries.
Traveling as a couple in midlife allows us to share a thorough version of what it is like to live and eat abroad. Alan focuses on the practical side of our stays and finds the local spots that others miss. He ensures we look at every city with a focus on safety and quality of life.

We Won’t Let You Look Like a Stupid Gringo
Our Philosophy
Food is culture. To understand a country you must understand its flavors and the people who cook them.
We look for traditional and local businesses. We prioritize immigrant-owned restaurants and kitchens run by women. Supporting these businesses helps the local economy and provides a true look at how people live.
We seek out authentic local spaces. We create guides to help you feel comfortable when you arrive in a new country. You will know how to order and how to fit in with local customs. Our guides cover:
- Where locals eat and which restaurants are worth the cost
- Local etiquette including what time to eat and how to pay
- Tipping and when it is appropriate to haggle
- Practical details on safety and healthcare

Over half of our 100,000 monthly readers are over 45. This site serves as a resource for planning a short holiday or a months-long period of slow travel. It also assists those looking at the logistics of a long-term move. I spend 30 days in various cities to document the actual experience of living there. We examine inflation and the quality of life in these locations. Our focus is always on value for money. Prices appear in USD and local currency to help you make practical choices about your next destination.
